Seeing Beneath the Surface

It's been quite some time since I've done a serious article, but this is a subject that's been weighing heavily on my mind. Right now, I'm 27 years old, which means I'm at the age where a lot of my friends/family are getting married, having children, buying new homes, adopting new pets, etc. I myself have had several of these changes within the past year. On October 14th of 2017, I married my wonderful wife, Lindsay. Then we moved from our humble apartment into our first home on November 30th. Finally, on January 26th, 2018, we welcomed our very first puppy, Kylo, into our new home. Needless to say, this year has been an eventful one and the days have flown by.

The reason I bring this up is because a lot of things that Lindsay and I have accomplished in the last year are some of the same things that I see a lot of people my age accomplishing. How do I know they're accomplishing these feats? Social media, of course. With apps like Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, and more, it's so easy to put our lives out there for the world to see. When we see these things going on in people's lives they offer a glimpse of the surface of what they're going through. When we see pictures of engagements, weddings, new homes, new babies, new pets, etc., it can be very easy to fall into the trap of saying, "Wow. That person is going through something great and they've got their life completely figured out." As someone who just went through a lot of these changes, I can adamantly confirm that everything is NOT as easy as what these pictures make them look.

Wedding/engagement pictures typically show a couple blissfully embracing their union and separating themselves from all the troubles in their lives. Now, don't get me wrong, I love my marriage and wouldn't trade it for anything, however, the wedding day, along with days leading up to it, aren't as stress-free as the pictures suggest. There's months of planning that go into the putting together of the ceremony. Thousands of decisions need to be made, dozens of appointments need to be attended, arrangements need to be reserved, etc. Again, weddings are wonderful and joyous occasions, but it's wildly inaccurate to think that engagement/wedding pictures fully embody the entire wedding experience.

The process of buying a new home is another good example of the point I'm trying to make. New homes are exciting opportunities for starting a new chapter in your life. If the old home/apartment you were living in wasn't the most glamorous place, moving can be a great way to start something new. However, unless you've gone through the process of purchasing a new home, you don't understand all the exhausting work that goes into it. There's mounds of paper work, a seemingly endless array of hoops to jump through, and the physical work of packing everything own in preparation for the big day. The pictures of a new home are beautiful and look serene, but no-one ever shows all the work you have to put in to get to that point.

The last example I'll look at is adopting a new pet. Pets, whether they be dogs, cats, birds, turtles, you name it, can be a family's greatest companion. If you find the right one, they're loyal, loving, playful, and ridiculously photogenic! I mean, just look at that little face! Everybody loves adorable pictures of new pets. You can see the head tilts, the cuddles, the smiling faces. There's plenty you don't see in those pictures, though. You don't see the accidents that happen around the house, you don't see all the toys that get torn apart, you don't see the endless mounds of hair that needs to be swept up, and you don't see the hole that in the couch that needs to be sewn back together (Yes, Kylo did chew a hole in our couch).

Now, what is the point of me being a Debby Downer and casting a shadow on all these wonderful events? Well, I think it's important to show the entire truth of what's happening. I'm not saying that all these pictures on social media are lying to you, because they're not. These are all wonderful occasions that should be celebrated. However, the stories that the pictures tell on the surface are much different than the stories that are forged by the entire experience. All of these examples are filled with up's and down's. The only things that outsiders see are the glory moments, but everything that's good comes with hard work and determination.
